Ford recovered from a dismal 1962 NASCAR season with 23 wins in 1963, a record attributable to two significant developments introduced halfway through the model year. First, once Ford aerodynamicists determined that the Galaxie’s roofline was slowing their racer at top speed, they designed a slippery new fastback roof that was 2-inches lower and significantly reduced drag, producing an increase in top speed. The new roof took maximum advantage of the second development, a new 427 CI powerplant to replace the 406 CI V-8.
The 427 was offered in both 410 HP and 425 HP configurations, both featuring a stout bottom end with cross-bolted main bearing caps, 11.5:1 compression, and a new solid-lifter cam and lightweight valvetrain for sustained high-speed operation. All 427-powered Galaxies included a 4-speed manual transmission, heavy-duty suspension, axles and brakes, uprated driveshafts and universal joints and larger 15-inch wheels and tires. With a single Holley 780 CFM 4-barrel carburetor on an aluminum intake manifold, the Q-code 427 generated 410 HP at 5,600 RPM and 476 lb-ft of torque at 3,400 RPM, impressive figures that hauled the full-size Galaxie to a top speed of 135 MPH.
The R-code dual-quad version pushed even harder, cranking out 425 HP at 6,000 RPM and 480 lb-ft of torque, but its exotic carburetion and middling low-speed acceleration made it a difficult sell to non-racing customers. Q-code equipped Galaxies were similarly rare. The sharp-looking 1963 Galaxie 500XL offered here is one of only 1,038 built, out of a total production of 94,730 Galaxie 500XLs. An incredibly original example, it is finished in mostly original Corinthian White paint with a Blue Deluxe interior featuring bucket seats and a console.
This former Meadow Brook Concours D'Elegance entrant has travelled a mere 3,937 miles and retains its factory-original Q-code 427/410 HP engine and 4-speed manual transmission, helping to make it a remarkable ‘60s automotive treasure that invites the closest scrutiny.
