Displayed at the 2016 Detroit Autorama, American Speed Company in Wayne City, Michigan, completed the professional custom build of this 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 Hardtop. Painted Moss Green by Motor City Solutions in Taylor, Michigan, the stock bumpers have been sectioned and tucked, and the grille painted black with the inner headlights converted to air intakes. Equipped with a Roush Stage II supercharger, a Ford Performance 5.0L/600 HP 32-valve Coyote V-8 engine has been set under the hood and backed with a Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission.
A Roadster Shop Fast Track pro touring square-rail chassis has been set with a Strange Engineering 3.90 rear end, an independent front suspension, a 4-link rear suspension with coilovers, Wilwood disc brakes, and power rack-and-pinion steering. The custom interior features bucket seats, a center console, unique paint and trim, Charcoal Wollsdorf leather upholstery and Graphite carpeting from ASC, a reduced-diameter, leather-wrapped stock steering wheel, ASC-series Classic Instruments gauges, Vintage Air, and an Alpine stereo system. The hood features a unique, slight bulge, and the performance tires are set with one-off Satin Budnik Remington wheels.
Total Performance was more than a marketing campaign at Ford during the 1960s; it was absolute, it was a way of being. Case in point, for the 1963, 1964 and 1965 NASCAR seasons, Ford vehicles won more victories than any other manufacturer. And this doesn’t take into account NHRA records. The Fairlane and Galaxie were the most ferocious from Ford in most accounts, giving a number of customers reasons to buy them and turn them into their own race car creations.
Interestingly, because of their size, police agencies around the country often preferred the Fairlane to any other car, as its lightweight nature, seemingly perfect midsize architecture and outstanding build quality gave it spectacular performance and drivability attributes.
