After setting the global standard for full-size factory high-performance pickups in the mid-‘90s with its first-generation Lightning, the Ford Special Vehicles Team rolled out its second-generation supertruck in 1999. Incremental improvements over the six-year run made this 2003 F150 SVT Lightning the most powerful of its kind before 2004, which marked the end of the line for the world’s fastest production pickup.
Factory equipped with a forged crankshaft and pistons to endure boost from the Eaton Gen IV supercharger, the water-to-air intercooled 5.4L Triton V-8 was factory rated for 380 HP and 450 lb-ft of torque, and a 4-speed automatic transmission and limited-slip rear differential put the tire melting power to the pavement. With SVT-engineered lowered suspension, Bilstein gas-charged shocks and 4-wheel disc brakes, the potent pickup could launch from 0-60 MPH in about 5 seconds, run flat out at 148 MPH and hook up a 5,000-pound trailer to boot. Flowmaster side exit exhaust belted out supercharged sound.
Aerodynamic bodywork and a unique lighting package give this stepside distinctive style, and ceramic exterior coating protects red paint from the elements. The black and gray interior features 40/60 split seating with lateral bolstering, SVT-signature white-face electroluminescent instrumentation including a boost gauge, and a four-spoke tilt steering wheel. Air conditioning and an AM/FM radio with an in-dash 6-disc changer deliver year-round comfort and entertainment.
The limited edition supertruck underwent extensive service in 2022 that included spark plugs, a supercharger belt and a drive belt for peak boost, as well as transmission and rear differential fluid change for ongoing power delivery and new control arms, brake pads and Nitto tires on the 18-inch SVT five-spoke alloy wheels for maximum grip at the hit and through the apex. The supercharged hauler is one of 4,270 for the model year.
