After purchasing this 1993 F150 SVT Lightning from its original owner, Kenny and Marilyn Newcombe used the truck for towing the couples’ Mustang show cars around the country. Well maintained and preserved, the truck is an excellent example from the first year of Ford’s first entry into the sport pickup market. As a replacement for Ford’s earlier Ford Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), the Special Vehicle Team was created in 1991 to market Ford vehicles that offered performance, controlled compliance handling and exclusivity.
SVT introduced its first two vehicles in 1993: the Mustang Cobra and the F150 Lightning, a regular cab, short-wheelbase pickup powered by a fuel-injected 5.8L (351 CI) V-8. With high-flow GT40 cylinder heads, a 65mm throttle body on a custom tubular intake, and stainless steel, tubular headers with dual exhaust, the engine produced 240 HP and 340 lb-ft of torque to provide both exhilarating acceleration and superb towing ability. Produced for three model years (1993-95), all first-generation Lightnings used Ford’s E4OD 4-speed automatic overdrive and 8.8-inch Traction-Lok differential with 4.10 gears.
Notably, the Lightning trucks were lowered 1 inch at the front and 2.5 inches at the rear, with Monroe shocks along with slapper-style traction bars to assist with launching and reducing from the wheel-hop. Two colors were available in 1993, monochromatic black and Vermillion Red, and a front air dam with fog lights added sporty looks, along with the Lightning-specific 17-inch, cast aluminum wheels with Firestone Firehawk tires. In the first year of SVT’s sport pickup, Ford produced 5,276 Lightnings; of those, just 2,585 were Vermillion Red like this one from The Kenny & Marilyn Newcombe Collection.
Built in May 1993 and originally sold at Bill Elliott Ford in Dahlonega, Georgia, this F150 was purchased from its original owner by the Newcombes on October 23, 1997 and driven to the Savannah Mustang Club’s 8th annual show the next day, where it took first place in its class. The truck was also used to haul a 20-foot car trailer with a Mustang inside to Detroit and back for an MCA national show. Maintained in climate-controlled storage, the low-mileage Lightning is equipped with dual gas tanks, a drop-in bedliner, soft tonneau cover and a trailer hitch receiver.
