First introduced in 1966 at that year's Turin Show, and based on a shortened FIAT 124 saloon floor pan and running gear, Pininfarina's attractive Sport Spider would prove an outstanding success for FIAT, over 200,000 being sold before production ended in the early 1980s. The coupé and spider were also marketed North America, beginning in 1968. To cater for American preferences, a General Motors three-speed automatic transmission became available from 1979, while for 1980 a version with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection and a catalytic converter and was introduced for California and standardised in North America for 1981.
After being discontinued by FIAT in 1981, Pininfarina kept the model going for three more years as the Pininfarina Spider Azzurra for the North American market and Pininfarina Spidereuropa in Europe.
This stunning FIAT 124 Spideramerica boasts an illustrious history. Although, according to the Certificate of Origin, this car was produced in October 1980, it was only registered in 1983 under the name of Editoriale Domus SrL, the famous publishing company which, among other titles, is home of the leading Italian motoring magazines Quattroruote and Ruoteclassiche. As such, it featured on the cover of the latter in their November 2009 issue, being photographed and driven by Sofia Bordone, then an editor of Ruoteclassiche and the daughter of Giovanna Mazzocchi Bordone, president of Editoriale Domus.
In the article Sofia Bordone recalled that the FIAT had been ordered new by her aunt Maria Grazia, who used the car for some time before it was consigned to their in-house collection, the majority of which was sold at auction in 2016. It was then that the vendor purchased the car for his exclusive private collection.
Interestingly, this car is a US version and features the 2.0-litre fuel-injected engine and automatic transmission. Having resided for the greater part of its life in the aforementioned collections, the car displays a total of only 25,700 kilometres on the odometer, which is believed to be genuine. Attractively finished in light beige with a matching interior and soft-top, it is offered with Italian registration documents; the aforementioned Certificate of Origin; a copy of the Ruoteclassiche article; and the owner's manual. FIAT 124 Spiders do not come with better provenance than this example.
