It has become somewhat of a tradition for the introduction of a new Ferrari model to be steeped in controversy, but few have had as much impact as the Testarossa.
Introduced in 1984 at the Paris Motor Show, the replacement for Ferrari’s flagship Berlinetta Boxer 512 polarized onlookers with its edgy styling, which designer Sergio Pininfarina himself described as “an exaggeration in flamboyance.” Such was the impact of Pininfarina’s design—from its wedge-shaped silhouette to its flying side mirrors, distinctive body-side intake strakes feeding twin rear-mounted radiators and ample rear quarters—that it briefly overshadowed the fact that it was also an outstanding redefinition of the grand-touring supercar.
Capable of exceeding 180 MPH, its performance prompted MotorTrend magazine to declare, “Once you get beyond the way you expect its size and weight to feel, the Testarossa is surprisingly cooperative and unintimidating to drive, particularly in comparison to its Boxer forerunner … It’s an all-around delight to drive, fast or slow, and is a hospitable grand tourer.” The first Ferrari designed specifically for the American market, the Testarossa was a clean sheet design built on Ferrari’s proven flagship engineering elements: double wishbone front and rear suspension, Cromodora alloy wheels fitted with the widest rubber possible, large ventilated disc brakes and advanced aerodynamics, all in service to maximizing the potential of its 4.9L flat-12 engine, which employed Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, twin overhead cams and four valves per cylinder to generate 380 HP at 5,750 RPM through a gated 5-speed rear-mounted transaxle.
Offered with an odometer reading of 39,389 miles, the 1990 Ferrari Testarossa offered here presents beautifully in black paint with a matching leather interior appointed with air conditioning and power windows. While 40 years might have passed since the Testarossa’s unveiling, Ferrari’s revolutionary ‘80s supercar remains as brilliantly stylish and enjoyable as ever.
