Ferrari has dramatically redefined the hypercar concept—and perhaps its very brand—with the SF90 Stradale, a car that was developed to become the legendary Italian automaker’s new benchmark. It breaks new ground in several directions. It is the quickest, most powerful Ferrari road car ever, rocketing from 0 to 60 MPH in just under 2.5 seconds, the first Ferrari flagship model since the revolutionary F40 to employ other than V-12 power, the first to offer a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, the first midengine Ferrari with all-wheel drive and the first to use electric power steering and brake-by-wire technology.
The SF90 Stradale is a true hybrid with a midmounted, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine, an e-drive unit set between the engine and the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and two more electric motors driving the front wheels. This system gives the Stradale up to 15 miles driving on electric front wheel power only at up to 84 MPH. A thoroughly revised version of the F154 engine that first appeared in the California T and then the 488 and F8 Tributo, the Stradale’s V-8 has been upgraded with new internals, higher-capacity turbos and a new intake system.
There is also a slight increase in displacement from 3.9 to 4.0L, thanks to a redesigned combustion chamber, together raising output from the F8’s 711 HP to 769 HP and 590 lb-ft of torque. The new V-8 is also lighter and, along with the new 8-speed gearbox, carries a lower profile, lowering the host car’s center of gravity. The electric power units add another 217 HP to the mix, resulting in a total output of 986 HP. Drivers need only concern themselves with choosing from four eManettino settings and allowing the Stradale’s sophisticated multiple control systems to manage the flow of power between the engine, e-motors and batteries.
ESSC (Electronic Side Slip Control) oversees the interchange between the Stradale’s F1 Electric Traction Control and E-Diff 3 systems, magnetorheological damping, brake-by-wire, torque vectoring and Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer 2.0 (drift management), all contributing to drawing maximum performance from the hybrid drivetrain. Modulated by ABS and EDB (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) the Stradale’s Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brakes with red calipers draw the Stradale down from speed and serve the car’s energy recovery system. The Stradale’s shark-like shape is the outcome of 50% more wind tunnel development than was invested in the LaFerrari.
Ferrari’s F1 experience influenced the Stradale’s aerodynamics, maximizing airflow for both cooling and downforce. The most innovative aero element is found at the rear in the articulated central spoiler that drops down in high-downforce mode to exert 860 pounds of downforce at 186 MPH. Offered at just 57 miles from the incredible Michael Fux Collection, this attention-grabbing SF90 Stradale presents in beautiful Extracampionario White with Scuderia cloisonné fender shields and a brilliant red interior.
Custom designed for Fux, the Stradale’s appointments include Daytona-style seats with contrasting white stitching and white Cavallino headrest embroidery, a head-up display, carbon fiber driver zone and LEDs, upper tunnel trim and dash inserts, dual-zone climate control, American-spec AFS (Advanced Frontlighting System) LED headlights and LED tail lights. Carbon fiber is, of course, extensively employed for the side air splitters, engine cover, rear diffuser, under-door covers and exterior sill kicks. Rolling stock is comprised of Michelin tires on specially designed Silver aero-spoke alloy wheels with red Prancing Horse center caps.
