Offered at 57 delivery miles at the time of writing and appearing virtually untouched, this 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari is one of just 120 produced for the U.S. market. Unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show, the Ferrari LaFerrari was the most technologically advanced production Ferrari of its time, drawing deeply from the company’s Formula One program to assume its hallowed place as Maranello’s first hybrid-powered flagship.
Designed by Ferrari Styling Center under the guidance of chief designer Flavio Manzoni, the LaFerrari incorporates an all-carbon fiber monocoque structure and bodywork bristling with both passive and active aerodynamics, channeling airflow from its F1-style front spoiler through and around its exterior to the large active rear spoiler and moveable flaps located within the rear diffuser tunnels. The star of the show is the hybrid power system combining a 161 HP electric motor with a naturally aspirated 6.3L V-12 engine—the most powerful V-12 Ferrari road car engine ever—using Ferrari/Bosch Electronic Engine Management and dynamic ram induction system from Ferrari’s F1 program.
Its peak output of 789 HP at 9,000 RPM and 516 lb-ft of torque at 6,750 RPM in concert with the electric motor produces a monstrous 949 HP, driving through Ferrari’s excellent F1 7-speed gearbox to its top speed of 217 MPH. It is this hybrid powerplant’s seamless integration with an impressive array of electronic control systems that enables the LaFerrari’s awesome performance.
The F1-inspired HY-KERS Kinetic Energy Recovery System supplements power during split-second off-speed events such as during shifts or when beginning to accelerate out of a low-speed turn, combining with F1 electronic traction and stability controls, magnetorheological damping, and the third-generation E-Diff electronic differential. The LaFerrari’s Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) Performance Anti-Blockage System monitors input from the tires and yaw sensors and applies individual brakes as needed to keep the car on its intended course.
The electric motor harvests power from the LaFerrari’s Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brakes, the EBD and all other systems working in the background to perfectly translate the driver’s commands to the road through the LaFerrari-specific Pirelli P-Zero tires fitted to forged five-spoke alloy wheels. In keeping with its hypercar design brief, the LaFerrari’s interior is entirely driver-focused and efficient.
The butterfly doors open to reveal Nero leather-upholstered bucket seats with yellow accents and Prancing Horse headrest embroidery, an F1-style steering wheel with start button, Manettino driving mode selector and audio system controls, Alcantara inner trim, and controls for the audio, navigation, climate and telemetry systems. A testament to Ferrari’s world-beating technological expertise and dedication to supreme performance, this 2014 LaFerrari is accompanied by its own Ferrari Classiche Yellow Book.
