When Ferrari decided to offer the successor to the F40 to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the company paid heed to its “preferred customer” base by creating what sales and marketing director Dr. Michele Scannavini termed “an F1 car disguised as a road car,” drawing the boldest and most direct line ever between its F1 racers and its road cars.
Conceived by the company’s then-vice president, Piero Ferrari, and designed by Pininfarina Chief Designer Lorenzo Ramaciotti, the F50 accessed directly from the F1 program, employing a central tub constructed entirely of carbon fiber, the naturally aspirated Tipo F130B 4.7L/513 HP V-12 engine originally developed for the 1990 641 F1 and 333 SP racers, pushrod suspension, and sophisticated aerodynamics. Ramaciotti substituted the F40’s angular exterior theme for a more flowing shape culminating in a large rear spoiler and diffuser, while retaining much of the F40’s spartan and purposeful interior appointments.
The result was a car with the superior power and balance to easily surpass the F40’s lap times at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track and achieve a claimed top speed of 202 MPH. Scarcely driven during a reported period of long-term ownership, this wonderful 1995 Ferrari F50, S/N 103501, is the 36th of just 349 produced from 1995 through 1997, showing an odometer reading of 1,357 kilometers at the time of writing. Classically dressed in Rosso Corsa paint with a Nero interior, the car received full Ferrari Classiche Certification in 2020, importantly documenting the originality of its matching-numbers chassis, engine, driveline and coachwork. In November 2022, renowned U.K.
Ferrari specialists DK Engineering commenced a comprehensive refreshing that returned the F50 to optimal performance and presentation, a task that included overhauling and refinishing the steering rack, radiator and suspension, refurbishing the wheels, and reupholstering the interior with the correct Lorica material. One of Ferrari’s celebrated “Big Five” halo flagships, this superb F50 is accompanied by a two-piece Schedoni luggage set, a factory-issued F50 Flight Case for its removable hardtop, service and maintenance invoices, a copy of the Certificate of Origin, and a comprehensive history report by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini.
