Imagine, if you will, strapping into the form-fitting black leather and Alcantara driver’s seat of this stunningly beautiful 2014 Ferrari F12. Surrounding you in more red-stitched black leather and raw carbon fiber, its interior feels scintillating, an impression confirmed when you turn the key and the dials in the deeply hooded instrument panel come to life, the odometer showing a digital readout of 1,260 miles.
The steering wheel’s leather covering shares space with more carbon fiber and presents you with buttons for engine start, shock adjustment, wipers and the red-anodized Manettino switch that allow you to choose between Wet, Sport, Race, CT Off and ESC Off modes, the latter two switching off Traction Control and Electronic Stability Control, respectively, and allowing the choice between taking complete control or enabling the F12’s extraordinary electronic management systems to keep you on the road at speed. Push the red Engine Start button: you hear and feel the F12’s exotic all-aluminum 6.3L/731 HP V-12 bark to life and settle into that characteristic growl.
Engage the paddle-shifted 7-speed dual-clutch F1 semi-automatic gearbox and launch the car forward at an ungodly rate of acceleration, zooming past 60 MPH in 3.5 seconds and careening to a top speed of 211 MPH. The F12’s aluminum chassis and body are packaged and sculpted to leverage airflow through and around the car, and its double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension are well able to handle the V-12’s output throughout its power range thanks to its electromagnetic dampers, stability and traction controls, E-Diff3 electronic differential and the ABS watching over its carbon-ceramic disc brakes.
In its time, the Ferrari F12 was the quickest and fastest rear-wheel-drive production car ever made, and in the case of this 2014 Rosso Scuderia example, it sports $162,626 in optional extras, including a carbon-fiber driver zone and LEDs, carbon-fiber engine covers, door-panel trim, filter-box cover, rear diffuser and front wing, and Bi-xenon headlamps with Adaptive Front Lighting. Incredibly quick and amazingly fun to drive, this is one of the world’s great grand-touring machines.
