Upon introduction in 1984, Ferrari’s Testarossa recalled the iconic name of Maranello’s dominant sports racers of the late 1950s and created a massive sensation. Sporting a 390 HP flat-12 engine and gorgeously flowing Pininfarina styling, the new Testarossa debuted as the fastest Ferrari road car ever produced to date. Speaking of styling, while the “cheese grater” side strakes have been dismissed as a trendy styling cue, they efficiently channeled cooling airflow into the radiators at the Testarossa’s rear flanks.
Importantly, the Testarossa forced Lamborghini to up its game considerably, resulting in uprated versions of the Countach, eventually spurring Ferrari to release the updated 512TR at Geneva in 1992. Produced only through 1994, it was capable of reaching 195 MPH with a comprehensively upgraded engine developing 421 BHP, plus carefully updated styling. As before, this final Testarossa variant delivered a surprisingly user-friendly driving experience to match its shattering performance. According to renowned Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, 2,261 of these refined performers were built in all.
Understood to be one of only 408 examples originally sold in the U.S., this black on black leather example from 1993 shows just 27,000 miles. In addition to the uprated 4.9L horizontally opposed flat 12-cylinder engine, the TR’s many race-derived technical features include a dog-leg 5-speed manual transaxle with Ferrari’s classical gated shift quadrant, plus cross-drilled and vented disc brakes with cooling ducts up front. The TR’s renowned drivability and friendly operating characteristics and visibility are enhanced with air conditioning, power window lifts, comprehensive instrumentation and embossed Ferrari “Cavallino Rampante” motifs to each seatback.
