Ferrari revived a legendary name with the introduction of the all new Testarossa at the 1984 Paris Auto Show. Named after the all-conquering V-12-powered sports racers of the late 1950s and early ‘60s, the new Testarossa was the first production 12-cylinder Ferrari offered in North America since the landmark 1968-1973 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Initial reaction to its innovative Pininfarina styling was mixed but soon gave way to widespread acceptance on the strength of performance that surpassed that of every roadgoing Ferrari before it, thanks to its 4.9L flat-12 architecture, new 4-valve heads, refined fuel injection and valve timing.
In 1992, Ferrari substantially improved on the formula with the new 512TR. Refinements included lowering the flat-12 engine, 5-speed transmission and integrated limited-slip differential in the chassis, which itself was lowered to improve roadholding and steering response, assets enhanced by refined suspension tuning, new 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and 4-wheel cross-drilled and ventilated disc brakes with 4-piston calipers. The rear deck was redesigned for cleaner air flow and improved heat extraction to maximize the performance of the 512TR’s more powerful 4.9L/422 HP engine.
Interior ergonomics were also considerably improved, with all these refinements coming together in the ultimate supercar of its era and a spectacular grand tourer to boot. One of 408 examples delivered to North America between 1992 and 1994, this 1993 Ferrari 512TR boasts the classic pairing of Rosso Corsa paint with a tan Connolly leather interior featuring clustered instrumentation, bucket seats, air conditioning, power windows, a Sony stereo system and a gated shifter.
A mechanical refreshing in 2020 included an engine-out timing belt service along with new belts, gaskets, seals, spark plugs, as well as a rebuild of the water pump, air conditioning service, fresh brake fluid and new Continental ExtremeContact Sport Plus tires.
