"Back in 2009 the Ferrari 458 Italia emerged from the famous factory gates in Maranello to replace the 430. Its ancestry reaches all the way back to the late '60s Dino, the car named after Enzo Ferrari's son that forged the concept of the 'junior Ferrari' and introduced the mid-engined platform to the brand." – evo magazine.
Although officially announced as the F430's successor, the 458 was an entirely new design, incorporating technologies developed as part of the Italian manufacturer's Formula 1 programme. The 458's specification and performance suggested that it was anything but a 'junior' Ferrari, as it boasted a 4.5-litre V8 engine producing 562bhp, an output good enough for a top speed of 325km/h (202mph). Reflecting the ongoing trend among supercars towards clutch-less semi-automatic transmissions, a seven-speed Getrag gearbox of that type was the only one available on the 458. To the regret of many enthusiasts, Ferrari's classic gated manual 'box was no longer an option.
In keeping with Ferrari tradition, the 458's body was designed by Carrozzeria Pininfarina under the supervision of Ferrari's design director, Donato Coco. As one would expect of a car with a 200mph-plus capability, aerodynamics played a major role in the design, yet despite generating considerable downforce the 458's beautifully curvaceous body was remarkably devoid of extraneous appendages. Former Ferrari Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher had a hand in the design of the interior, which featured a steering wheel incorporating many of the controls normally located on the dashboard or on stalks, as found in modern competition cars.
Despite the apparent handicaps of 135kg weight disadvantage and regular road tyres, the 458 lapped Ferrari's Fiorano test circuit quicker than the track-focused 430 Scuderia. "This was the result of Ferrari going for gold in every department," declared evo. "The 458 represented a quantum leap in technological terms, bringing a hoard of new systems into play to create an enveloping, pure driving experience."
Spin-off models were not long in coming, the first new 458 variant being the almost inevitable Spider, introduced in 2011. The Spider was followed in 2013 by the 458 Speciale, which offered even more performance than before. Revised bodywork and active aerodynamics were two of the many advances over the original 458, together with updated electronics and an engine that now produced 597bhp. In 2014 Ferrari introduced an open-top version: the 458 Speciale Aperta.

Bien qu'officiellement présentée comme l'héritière de la F430, la 458 était un concept entièrement nouveau, incorporant des technologies développées dans le cadre du programme de Formule 1 du constructeur italien. Les caractéristiques et les performances de la 458 suggéraient que c'était tout sauf une « petite Ferrari », avec son V8 4,5 litre développant 562 ch, une puissance suffisante pour une vitesse de pointe de 325 km/h. Reflétant la tendance des supercars d'alors à adopter des transmissions semi-automatiques sans embrayage, une boîte à sept rapports Getrag de ce type était la seule proposée sur la 458. Au regret de nombreux enthousiastes, la boîte manuelle Ferrari avec sa traditionnelle grille n'était plus disponible en option.
Respectant la tradition Ferrari, la carrosserie de la 458 avait été dessinée par la carrozzeria Pininfarina sous la supervision du directeur du style Ferrari, Donato Coco. Comme on pouvait s'y attendre sur une voiture capable d'atteindre les 320 km/h, l'aérodynamique jouait un rôle majeur dans le design, et bien que générant un appui considérable, la jolie carrosserie toute en courbes de la 458 était remarquablement exempte de tout appendice extérieur. L'ancien pilote de Formule 1 de Ferrari, Michael Schumacher, avait eu son mot à dire dans le design de l'intérieur qui était doté d'un volant incorporant des contrôles normalement logés sur le tableau de bord ou sur des comodos, comme sur les voitures de compétition modernes.

Une carrosserie modifiée et une aérodynamique active étaient deux des nombreuses innovations par rapport à la 458 originale, avec une électronique améliorée et un moteur qui développait désormais 597 ch. En 2014, Ferrari dévoilait une version ouverte – la 458 Speciale Aperta.
