While Ferrari is most often associated with founder Enzo Ferrari’s preferred V-12 engine layout, the marque’s V-8 model lines are equally renowned for their many virtues. Introduced at the September 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 458 Italia succeeded the F430 and marked an important evolution in Ferrari’s V-8 model legacy. Styled by Donato Coco at the Ferrari Styling Center with Pininfarina, the 458 Italia incorporated Formula One-derived technologies throughout, including deformable aeroelastic winglets in the front grille that deploy at higher speeds. Capable of exceeding 200 MPH, the 458 Italia was developed into the 458 Speciale, a higher-performance variant produced from 2014 to 2015.
Enhancements included a more powerful 597 HP engine specification, forged wheels and a taller rear spoiler, yielding exceptional performance for road and track. The Ferrari 458 Speciale A—denoting “aperta” or open—debuted at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, adding a glamorous convertible variant to the high-performance 458 Speciale. Just 499 were produced. Featuring Ferrari’s 4.5L/597 HP naturally aspirated V-8 engine, it became the most powerful street-legal, naturally aspirated Ferrari convertible ever—a status it held until the 2017 LaFerrari Aperta. Capable of accelerating from rest to 62 MPH in just 3 seconds, the 458 Speciale A could reach 199 mph flat out.
Offered with just 308 miles at the time of writing and finished in Bianco Italia with special Italian tricolore stripes, this “1 of 499” 458 Speciale A is a visual and technical tour de force. Its 4.5L/597 HP V-8 engine pairs with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and performance is maximized by advanced aerodynamics, F1-Trac traction control, side-slip control, magnetorheological damping, and carbon ceramic brakes with yellow calipers behind forged wheels. Extensive carbon fiber and Alcantara define the driver-centric interior, while a retractable hardtop provides open-air pleasure and weather protection. Scuderia shields appropriately grace the front fenders.
