When the Ferrari 365GTB/4 was first displayed at the Paris Auto Salon in 1968, it was the fastest and most expensive road-going Ferrari in the company’s glorious history. Capable of a confirmed top speed of 170 MPH, the Daytona, as it soon came to be known, was based on the marvelous 275GTB. It employed a race-proven chassis design, all-independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and a 4.4L double overhead cam V-12 working through a 5-speed rear transaxle. Capable of producing 352 HP and 315 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 RPM, the V-12 delivered astonishing performance and bellowed at full song like only a Ferrari can.

This heady combination was wrapped in one of the most smoothly styled bodies ever designed by Pininfarina, one that today is considered among the famed Italian coachbuilder’s most beautiful creations. A Grand Touring car par excellence, the Daytona also achieved excellent results in competition with independent teams, scoring 5th place at Le Mans in 1971, 5th to 9th places in 1972 and 6th and 9th in 1973. Daytonas also fared well in the U.S., notably placing 2nd at the Daytona 24 Hours in 1973 and again in 1979, the latter scored by a N.A.R.T. Daytona a full three years after the model had gone out of production.

The Daytona gained popular fame – and notoriety – when in November 1971, Dan Gurney and Brock Yates co-drove one from New York City to Redondo Beach, California, completing the Cannonball Run in a mere 35 hours and 54 minutes and proving the Daytona’s robustness at extended high speeds. Chassis number 14769, this 1971 Ferrari Daytona was completed at the factory on December 2, 1971 and was finished in Bianco Polo over a Nero leather interior. Completed to U.S. specifications with left-hand drive and air conditioning, it was delivered new to Bill Harrah’s Ferrari distributorship, Modern Classic Motors in Reno, Nevada.

In April 1972 Medina, Washington, resident Gary MacLeod became the car’s first private owner. After a time in a private collection in North Carolina it was purchased by William S. Ferguson, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, who had the car repainted in its current shade of Red. Now being offered from the Don Davis collection, chassis number 14769 remains unrestored with the exception of its single repaint. It has been exceedingly well maintained and remains in excellent condition throughout, including the Black leather interior. The car is fitted with Borrani chrome wire wheels with Michelin XWX radial tires.

Significantly, it comes complete with its original tools and tool roll, and a set of original and correct owner’s manuals in the correct leather pouches. After some years in storage, the car recently received a complete service to ensure its mechanical fitness. The carburetors were rebuilt and the brakes were serviced, all fluids and filters were replaced and the engine given a compression test, which it passed with ease. The car’s history is documented in part by service records from previous owners. Offered in largely original condition, chassis number 14769 retains its major original components.

It is ready to give its new owner years of sublime motoring and may also be considered a prime candidate for a comprehensive restoration. Whether traversing the open road or undergoing preparation for the Concours circuit, it is a fine example of the Ferrari Road & Track magazine called “the best sports car in the world.”
