Ferrari narrowed its factory racing efforts in the late 1960s to Formula One and Sports Prototypes, but the demand from clients and high-profile dealers for sports racers based on its road-going grand-touring machines continued unabated. Ferrari first answered the call in 1969 with a special aluminum-bodied competition version of the potent 365 GTB/4 for U.S. Ferrari distributor Luigi Chinetti, and the company eventually produced only fifteen of the so-called “Competizione” Daytona coupes in three series of five cars, each with running upgrades as production progressed.

This limited supply prompted a number of privateers to produce their own race-prepared Daytonas, resulting in a total of 11 privateer Competizione Daytonas, including this 1971 example, Serial No. 14049. Offered with a well-known history that began with its conversion to the factory-specification racer that debuted in the 1972 4 Hours of Le Mans, it was sold new by the renowned French Ferrari importer Charles Pozzi S.A. in Paris. Pozzi’s racing department then prepared it to Competizione specifications for the French sportsman driver Philippe Cornet-Epinat. The conversion to Competizione specs began with 9-inch front and 11-inch rear wheels, racing tires and full fender flares.

Lower front dive planes and screened cooling ducts, fender-mounted air splitters, a C-pillar-mounted competition fuel filler, rear brake scoops and a roll bar were also fitted. To complete the conversion, Pozzi’s race shop balanced, blueprinted and rebuilt the Daytona’s 4.4L engine, installing high-compression pistons and P6 competition cams, and modifying the carburetors with larger venturis and the appropriate jetting for Le Mans’ sustained high speeds. Cornet-Epinat qualified the transformed Daytona 29th for the 1972 Le Mans 4 Hours on March 19, 1972, and drove it to a creditable fifth in the GT class and eighth overall.

He also raced the car at Mas du Clos and other French club events before selling it to its next owner, who commissioned a professional conversion to the Spyder configuration in which it remained for the next 30 years. Noted Ferrari expert Michael Sheehan purchased 14049 in April 2007. In September 2007, he commissioned renowned Ferrari specialists Motion Products, Inc., of Neenah, Wisconsin, to begin a cosmetic restoration of the car to its original 1972 Le Mans Competizione berlinetta specification, which it completed in the fall of 2008. In addition to virtually flawless body and paint work, 14049’s engine compartment and chassis were refinished and detailed.

Netherlands Ferrari experts Roelofs Engineering BV supplied a complete new Daytona Competizione suspension system, comprising racing shocks, springs, sway bars and larger competition brakes. Carobu Engineering of Estancia, New Mexico, rebuilt the car’s original matching-numbers 4-cam V-12 engine to full competition specification at a cost of $54,000, vastly improving both performance and durability with modern lightweight pistons, racing-grade connecting rods, improved cam profiles and free-flowing stainless-steel exhaust headers exiting through split dual-side exhaust. Dyno testing and tuning achieved peak output figures of 455.5 HP at 7,400 RPM and 354 lb-ft of torque at 6,200 RPM.

In 2014, Chris Dugan’s Dugan Enterprises of Oceanside, California, performed the final assembly, installing the rebuilt engine and transaxle, and sorting the suspension and brakes to ensure the car was properly “dialed in." In January 2015, the completed 14049 performed flawlessly on track at the Palm Beach International Raceway at the Cavallino Classic, and it was then shown at the Cavallino Classic Concorso d’Eleganza on the front lawn of the Breakers Resort Hotel. Fully race-prepared, this Daytona Competizione is a sensational machine with a Le Mans provenance, restored by an all-star roster of expert Ferrari competition and restoration talents.

It offers stunning performance and is eligible for all the world’s great vintage events, including the Monterey Historic Reunion, the Daytona 24 Hour Classic and the Classic 12 Hours of Sebring.
