Consider that it takes an Indy car about 5 miles to warm up to its top speed of approximately 220 MPH. Hold that thought while we point out that for Road & Track’s 2007 Speed Kings cover feature shootout at Naval Air Station Lemoore in California, this 2006 Hennessey Venom 1000 Twin Turbo Viper tore off a 0-to-200 MPH blast of 20.3 seconds, in just 3,488 feet – less than three quarters of a mile!
Even better, it reached 220.9 MPH in the standing mile to take the win in R&T’s first annual “Drag Race for Supercars.” More impressive yet is that the Viper’s 0-200 MPH time at the Road & Track test was four seconds faster than that of the Bugatti Veyron, the fastest production supercar at the time. No anomaly, that feat; the car turned in the same blistering performance when it was driven by John Kiewicz in an all-around supercar shootout in the June 2006 issue of Motor Trend. It was also featured on the cover of Germany’s Auto Bild.
One of only 24 Hennessy Venom 1000 Vipers built, its secret is the twin turbocharged V-10 that launches with a computer-regulated progressive power delivery that starts at 800 horsepower and increases to its peak of 1,100 beginning at 120 MPH. Summing up his experience in piloting this “Fly Navy” rocket for Road & Track’s feature story, veteran race driver Steve Millen opined, “I'd say the Hennessey Viper is by far the most spectacular car I've driven today.” High praise indeed, but completely justified for a car that can trailer anything else on the road – or the runway!
