In 1987, Dodge introduced the midsize Dakota Pickup truck. Slightly larger than most imported pickups, but not as big as a standard full-size pickup, it filled a market niche and proved to be a healthy seller. For 1989, the Dodge Shelby Dakota Pickup was introduced, bringing a bit of spice to the formula. This is No. 1,253 of 1,500 Shelby Dakotas produced, 995 of which were painted red. Unrestored, this rare pickup has only covered 5,851 miles from new, matching its rarity with a fantastic overall condition.
Featuring a 318/175 HP V-8 engine with throttle-body fuel injection, a 4-speed automatic transmission, transmission cooler, lock-up torque converter, rear-wheel drive and a limited-slip differential, the Shelby Dakota was indeed ready to move. The Shelby Dakota also featured a host of specialized equipment such as a specially designed air dam with Bosch fog lamps, custom sail panels between the cab and bed, monogramed, two-tone red and gray “Shelby” upholstery for the bench seat and door panels, and exclusive Shelby-Chrysler wheels shod with high-performance Goodyear tires.
Available only in red or white, the Shelby Dakotas were appointed with distinctive graphics and blackout treatment, giving it a remarkably racy look. The rarest of the Shelby Dakotas was ordered with a red and white two-tone paint scheme—only one was built. Shelby began working with Chrysler to bring more pep and provenance to Dodge products beginning with the 1983 Charger, broadening the brand of Shelby-tuned-Dodges. The branding and performance enhancements were spot on; the Shelby name, performance magic and limited production numbers brought a healthy dose of track prowess and market exclusivity to Dodge.
For the era, the Shelby Dakota was no slouch, clocking a 0-60 MPH run in about 8.5 seconds. The Shelby Dakota arguably could be the responsible for beginning the era of the Performance Pickup as well, with Chevrolet introducing the 454 SS in 1990, GMC launching the Syclone in 1991 and Ford striking the market with Lightning in 1993.
