Differences between police vehicles are many. Some are cruisers, some are for additional support, but this one is where the rubber meets the road. This 2015 Dodge Charger Police Pursuit is exactly what is stated: built with the thought of getting after the bad guys. Moreover, unlike many law enforcement vehicles, it features low mileage, with an odometer that reads 1,922 miles. As fans of the “Blues Brothers” know, Mopar cop cars are quite well-known and respected, and the company was involved in law enforcement vehicles from the 1930s onward. Their construction meant performance suspensions, wider tires, highway-friendly final gearing and a reliable engine design.
In this case, under the hood is a 5.7L Hemi V-8 engine, aided by the heavy-duty 5-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. A Car & Driver road test on a 2015 demonstrator resulted in 60 MPH acceleration in 5.2 seconds and a 13.8-second quarter-mile at 103 MPH. That car featured the heavy-duty suspension with rear load-leveling, electrohydraulic power steering with a fluid cooler, the big 220-amp alternator and 800-amp battery, and heavy-duty disc brakes with police-tuned ABS. This example comes with all the extras, thanks to a Whelen Engineering police upgrade. There are emergency lights, a siren, bullhorn speaker and driver’s side exterior spot lamp.
The stellar body is covered in black, and the black cloth interior is created with occupational comfort in mind. Added equipment here includes the Mopar by Tavis in-dash power-panel design and a wiring harness located in the trunk, with a center shelf suitable for a police computer. The front bucket seats are divided by the custom console with cupholders, the Whelen control panel for the lights and multi-channel radio handset. Air conditioning, cruise control, a 7,000 RPM tach and 160 MPH speedometer are also here. The outside chrome trim is limited, and small hubcaps on the black steel wheels with blackwall Goodyear Eagle tires complete it.
