Thanks to Richard Petty’s success on the NASCAR circuit and frankly a lack of stylish competitors, the Dodge Chargers of the post-Hemi 1972-74 era were very popular street cars. The example here, from 1973, has been treated to a full rotisserie restoration and further customized in keeping its heritage of performance. Many Chargers from this time were powered by small-block or even slant-6 engines, but beneath the hood here resides the biggest bullet in the Mopar arsenal: the RB-series 440 CI Magnum V-8 engine.
This mill is heavily breathed-on, featuring Edelbrock aluminum heads and Edelbrock dual-quad intake, a FiTech dual-quad fuel injection, MSD electronic ignition with matched MSD distributor, a modern serpentine belt layout with custom 150-amp alternator, and TTI Performance ceramic-coated polished headers. Behind this is an A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission and an Auburn Sure Grip upgraded differential, a driveline combination able to match the power potential. However, this is not a drag package but a street sweeper.
Undercarriage retrofits include custom powder-coated suspension parts, subframe connectors, Wilwood power disc brakes on all four corners (6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers) and Borgeson power steering. After admiring the exterior covered in Spies Hecker Candy Red, open the door to find a custom leather interior in tan with power seats featuring three-point seatbelts, a custom headliner, power locks and windows, and new glass and weather stripping. A group of Dakota Digital gauges and Vintage Air with Dakota controls and a Retrosound stereo with amplifier complete the dash.
Exterior work included extensive prep with the fenders, hood, and trunk dip-cleaned, and the body and doors were media-blasted. Installing classic-look 1971 R/T front and rear bumpers give this car a fresh appearance no other 1973 factory car likely had ever had. This car rides on a set of Foose 18-inch wheels wrapped in new BF Goodrich rubber. Ready for the boulevard, highway and smiles of enjoyment, it really is a chargin’ Charger.
