The ads called it “Boss Hoss” and the model year proved that to be true for the new Dodge Charger. After all, David Pearson won the NASCAR Grand National crown in one, which became possible not only because of the new body design but also the legality of its just-released production engine option. This is a real 1966 Hemi Charger, one of 468 produced, and is also equipped with the 4-speed transmission. The powerplant had formerly been a race-only engine, but in 1966 Chrysler created the street version which paved the way to make it legal for Bill France’s racing circuit as well as in NHRA Stock Eliminator.
This car is powered by the 426 CI/425 HP V-8 engine that made it happen, featuring dual 4-barrel carburetors and a factory aluminum intake manifold feeding the hemispherical cylinder heads. Details include the huge “chrome dome” air cleaner and black valve covers. The factory used large-diameter pipes and mufflers on Hemi installations. As noted, the A833 4-speed manual transmission backs this up, and this car also features power steering. The exterior color is red, fitting for this model.
The body shape was created with crisp lines, with the covered headlamp grille, long red taillight lens with the name CHARGER spelled out in block letters, and unique fold-down rear seats visible through the large rear window. Indeed, the Charger was posited as a recipient for the turbine engine and uses an extended-length console as part of its appointments. The interior is in black with front and rear bucket seats with the woodgrain-theme sport steering wheel, AM radio, special gauge cluster with tachometer, and driver’s side mirror remote.
There is tinted glass, 426 Hemi fender emblems, upper and lower body-side chrome trim lines, and a set of full-size spinner wheel covers on steel wheels, which host redline tires. This classic Dodge’s odometer reads under 46,000 miles and it is highlighted by some mild aging.
