The third-generation Dodge Challenger certainly made a big impression on the public the year it was reintroduced as a 2009 model, and within six months, the factory had announced a special, competition-only version it called the Drag Pak. Initially built to body-in-white specifications at the Brampton assembly plant in Canada, the car here is No. 22 of the 100 produced for this program and remains in as-delivered condition. The cars were each set up to be completed to the requirements of whichever class the buyer intended to race in. This one was optioned with the 6.1L Hemi V-8 engine, the top horsepower package offered in the Drag Pak.
This race engine includes the forged steel crank and rods, a hydraulic roller camshaft, forged pistons and a special high-ram EFI intake manifold. The car was ordered configured for a 6-speed manual transmission, which is not included so its new racer can source any model desired. A special, modified K-member with a drop-out crossmember was part of the car’s packaging, as was the deletion of any equipment not needed to for racing.
Indeed, those changes as well as lightweight body panels, a unique lift-off composite hood with functional scoop and the lightweight front brake assembly and cable-operated throttle linkage and pedal assembly were part of keeping the Drag Paks from being street-legal. The exterior is painted in Stone White with a black interior, which includes Viper-style front seats still in the factory plastic covering, polycarbonate door windows, a manual rack-and-pinion steering system, the lightweight cooling module and electric fan, white-faced gauges and a dash-centered toggle switch panel. The minimum of 100 Challenger Drag Race units were to meet NHRA requirements, yet the car here is like new.
