A fully restored, outstanding example, formerly of the Noel Thompson Collection
Model C-76. 375 bhp, 392 cu. in. Hemi OHV V-8 engine, three-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 126 in.
The legendary Chrysler 300C, Motor Trend’s Car of the Year in 1957, was developed from the outset as a completely integrated package. One of the fastest and most powerful American production cars, the 300C was also one of the most expensive. This updated version of the three-year-old model continued the precedent set the previous two years with another bump in horsepower, from 340 to 375. Virgil Exner’s Forward Look styling was continued, although, the front end was wider and louder, as were the enlarged tailfins.
The standard 300C engine, enlarged to 392 cubic inches, was equipped with two 4-barrel carburetors, a nickel block, solid lifter cams, 9.25:1 compression, and delivered 375 horsepower. Exceptional handling resulted from a lowered center of gravity, lower placement of the weighty engine, and the careful location of the rear leaf springs. Ducts located below the headlights cooled the front brakes, and the controversial tailfins were proven to increase stability at speed.
While not campaigned in NASCAR, the 300C swept the Flying Mile competition at Daytona Beach with a speed of 134 miles per hour. Chrysler engineers clocked 145.7 miles per hour at the Chelsea Proving Grounds with a mildly modified model, and in stock form, the 300C could reach 60 miles per hour in less than eight seconds.
The Chrysler 300C Convertible offered here received a complete, body-off restoration and is finished in a very sharp black with deep glossy panels and a complementing beige leather interior. We understand that this example was originally a triple black delivery car from the factory, however, during the restoration, the beige color was chosen for the interior for contrast. The body contours and gaps are all excellent with proper door closure; all of the replated brightwork is very good, with only minor polishing marks. The nicely refinished interior is lightly worn with creature comforts, including power steering, power brakes, power seats, and an AM radio.
The engine bay and dual quad Hemi engine are nicely detailed but not over-restored; it is very close, in fact, to what it would have looked like from the factory. Prior to joining the Cars of Dreams Museum, this example was part of the stable of noted East Coast collector Mr. Noel Thompson, who was widely known and respected for his outstanding collection of motor cars.
A look underneath the body will reveal what was obviously a body-off restoration, although, there is some sign of road use and general age. This presentation could easily be improved with a thorough detailing. The correctly restored trunk includes a full spare tire, car cover, some miscellaneous service information including copies of factory bulletins, as well as an eight-page color brochure entitled The Chrysler 300C – America’s Greatest Performing Car, a collision parts list for 1957 Chrysler models, and an owner’s manual. The scant production of 484 convertible examples of the 300C and its corresponding low survival rate make all examples desirable. This is one that its new owner will be proud to show off or use to take advantage of its performance for top-down touring.
