Decades before the term “SUV” entered the vernacular, several auto manufacturers were building their own version of a windowed station wagon on a truck chassis, all marketed as all-purpose workhorses designed to serve the rapidly developing need for commercial utility vehicles in the country’s expanding metropolitan areas. Referred to as “carryall-suburbans” or simply suburbans, many of them used wood bodies manufactured by the U.S. Body and Forging Co. of Tell City, Indiana, which owned the “Westchester Suburban” trademark. Chevrolet debuted its own steel-bodied carryall-suburban in 1934, followed by a GMC model in 1937.
Now the longest-lived nameplate in the business, the Chevrolet Suburban has carved out a position that has been challenged by countless manufacturers but never displaced, its role expanding to include service with police, fire departments and other first responders, the military, federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies, and as limousines. It’s no surprise, then, that the Suburban has also earned a reputation as the perfect starting point for all levels of customization. The 1970 Chevrolet Suburban offered here is an excellent example of the latter, presenting beautifully following a cosmetic body-on restoration.
The Suburban’s a rare three-door version with a heavy-duty towing package featuring a 10,000-pound trailer hitch receiver, and its all-black exterior features custom removable gray side-stripe graphics. Lowered over 17-inch Eagle Alloy billet wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle GTII rubber, the Suburban is powered by a 454 CI big-block V-8 fitted with Magnaflow dual exhaust and mated to a 400 Turbo Hydra-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission. It also features Air Ride suspension, tubular front control arms, power steering and power brakes.
Bob Fulton at Showcase USA Conversions performed the conversion of the tan interior, which holds four passengers in the comfort of leather-upholstered bucket seats flanking two wood-trimmed consoles and features a leather-wrapped billet steering wheel on a tilt column. Luxury appointments include overhead air conditioning, a color television with remote and a combination stereo and alarm system by Custom Stereo and Cellular featuring a detachable head and a hidden 10-disc CD changer.
