Chevrolet re-introduced the El Camino name when its sport pickup returned after a four-year hiatus in 1964. Now based on the newly released midsize Chevelle instead of the Impala or Biscayne, the second-generation car offered here was from the following model season, 1965, and showcases refinements after a comprehensive ground-up restoration. The El Camino shape was based on the body stampings normally reserved for the two-door station wagon, and, with a two-seat cabin and its even-level profile pick-up bed, falls into the sport utility vehicle category.
Functional as a stylish carry-all, however, many El Caminos were used and used up in practical work environments over the ensuing years, making them uncommon today despite production totals of over 30,000 units per year during 1964-67. While many came with 6-cylinder power, this example features a rebuilt high-performance Chevrolet 350 CI engine. With a chrome twin-snorkel air cleaner, cast valve covers, aluminum intake and clean detailing throughout, this is an example that breaths at a level of performance in keeping with the Chevelle nameplate. In this instance, there is a Muncie 4-speed transmission behind it.
The outside features the familiar 1965 grille made so famous on the limited-edition Z16 coupe Chevelle of that same model year, and the car is covered in Marina Blue paint with a matched bed and two-tone blue interior. The upholstery inside is stretched over rare bucket seats, with power steering topped by a wood-grain three-spoke sport steering wheel and an OEM floor shifter booted to the carpeted trans tunnel. The metallic-finish dash insert has round-faced instruments, which are assisted by a knee-knocker tachometer and a bowtie-logo AM radio.
Featuring script El Camino identification, there are front bumper guards, rocker moldings, rear-quarter exhaust turn-downs, a highly detailed undercarriage and steel wheels hosting mag-style wheel covers with Firestone redline tires to complete the look. The show-quality El Camino here represents a unique moment when manufacturers were blending passenger and pickup body designs, and it’s been rebuilt to be appreciated.
