Muscle cars might have been around since 1949 (if you prescribe to the Oldsmobile 88 being the first of the breed), but the mid-‘60s and early-‘70s are regarded as the golden age for the midsize, high-horsepower “family” car: a mild-mannered, two door that, when properly equipped, could blow the doors off of nearly anything with four wheels. Today, many consider the muscular 1966 models as the most stylish of all Chevelles, with the forward rake of its front fenders and, in the case of the Super Sport 396, a tunneled rear window flanked by dramatic swept-back C-pillars. The SS wasn't an “option” that was simply added to a base model Chevelle.
The SS396 Chevelle had essentially become a “model” of its own. The revised appearance effectively evoked more of a sense of speed, while a blacked-out grille helped set it apart, along with requisite SS emblems and a unique hood featuring chromed simulated vents. Super Sport 396 models came with a choice of three big-block performance engines: a standard 396/325 HP engine, an optional 396/360 HP engine, or the late offering, an optional 396/375 HP engine. This Ermine White 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 has received a recent frame-off restoration, and it still carries a matching-numbers L34 396 CI V-8, which touted an official 360 HP and 420 lb-ft of torque from the factory.
The original cast-iron manifold has been replaced with a cast aluminum Edelbrock Performer intake, while a 2.5-inch dual exhaust with H-pipe, Dynomax mufflers and chrome tips extract spent gasses. A matching-numbers M21 Muncie 4-speed manual gearbox is also present, shooting power to the 12-bolt rear end with 3.73:1 gearing. Power transfers to the pavement via REV 5-spoke Classic 100 wheels, enveloped in Goodyear Eagle F1 tires. Stopping and turning power has been increased with power-assisted disc brakes on all four corners, plus a power steering unit.
Inside, the tri-pedal interior is swathed in black vinyl, with dual bucket seats separated by a full-length console that includes a chrome ball shifter with “T” reverse lockout and an electric clock. The dash features the “U14” Special Instrumentation Package, which includes an ammeter, engine temperature and oil pressure gauge, as well as the 5,500 RPM redline tachometer attached to the lower-right dash. An aftermarket AM/FM stereo with auxiliary input has been added to the dashboard, but the real music starts when dropping down a gear or two on the open road and letting this SS396 go at full song.
