The Impala name has been legendary with Chevrolet since it was introduced for the 1958 model year. Since then, it’s been a solid seller and performance offering for Chevrolet, spanning through 1985 and taking a break until it was reintroduced in 1994 as the Impala SS. Using the basic underpinnings and body of the Caprice Classic, the Impala SS was a breath of fresh air at Chevrolet. A true performance sedan packing a 5.7L/260 HP LT1 V-8 engine and electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission with a performance differential, it was something exciting for sedan buyers to consider.
Interestingly, the LT1 used in the Impala differed from the LT1 in the Camaro and Corvette in that the Impala LT1 had cast-iron heads instead of aluminum and the cam was designed for low-end torque instead of high-end horsepower. Available only in black with a gray interior, the 1995 model year would see the introduction of Dark Cherry Metallic and Dark Gray Green as exterior color options and minor changes would be seen through the final year of production, 1996.
This 1995 Impala SS offers all the amenities the vehicle became known for, including power steering, power brakes, power seats, power locks, digital instrumentation, AM/FM stereo system, leather upholstery, bucket seats and a center console to name a few elements. Interestingly, this Impala SS rolls on unique alloy wheels that reflect the Rally wheels of decades past with low-profile tires. Presented in the most popular color combination of black with a gray interior, this generation of Impala SS brought an aggressive, muscular presence with it, reminding some of the Buick Grand National.
A fabulous performer to back up its looks, the Impala SS would sprint from 0-60 MPH in 7 seconds flat, cross the quarter-mile in about 15.5 seconds and top out at just over 140 MPH. Those are terrific stats for the mid-1990s, and still respectable today.
