Introduced at the 2013 New York Auto Show, the 2014 Camaro Z28 excited people with a familiar name that meant performance over frills and handling paramount to all. This particular example has only covered 31 miles from new and was one of the first production vehicles fitted with the Multimatic DSSV race suspension. It’s also been equipped with the optional air conditioning, six-speaker audio system and performance traction-management system. Black on black, the interior is a combination of leather and microfiber surfaces, creating a plush but business-like environment. Even the gear knob and flat-bottom steering wheel are clothed in microfiber.
The steering wheel hosts controls for the cruise control and stereo system. The Recaro sport seats feature microfiber suede inserts and are remarkably supportive, particularly during spirited driving. To dial in the trackability of the Z28, Chevrolet not only tested it extensively at GM’s Milford Road Course, but also sent it to Nürburgring, Road Atlanta, Road America and Virginia International Raceway where it was fine tuned to handle nearly any competitive course. Chevrolet employed a special aerodynamics package with flared fenders, a front splitter, an underbody pan, a rear diffuser and a rear spoiler to create downforce and reduce lift.
To shed a few pounds, Chevrolet used fewer sound-deadening materials and thinned the back seat and rear windshield among other sleights. Unlike the original Z28, the fifth-generation Z28 uses a massive aluminum 7.0L LS7 V-8 engine good for 505 HP and 470 lb-ft of torque. The LS7 redlines at 7,000 RPM and features coated pistons, titanium intake valves and connecting rods, and forged-steel crankshaft and main-bearing caps. Power is sent to the rear via a Tremec close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission and Torsen limited-slip 3.91 Helical differential with cooler.
Keeping things balanced are 15-inch Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes with front cooling ducts and 19-inch forged-aluminum wheels with Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo tires. The Z28 clocked 0-60 MPH sprints at about 4.4 seconds and reportedly corners with the grace of a ballerina.
