Despite advances made by its archrivals at Packard and Lincoln through the late 1930s, Cadillac skillfully positioned itself for its continued dominance of America’s luxury-car market in 1940 and beyond. Among the major changes, Cadillac finally retired the costly, low-production Sixteen, phased out the LaSalle marque and consolidated its model lines around the proven 346 CI flathead V-8 engine. Model lines were reorganized, with Series 62 replacing the former Series 61.
Featuring a new “C-Body” design with bold “Torpedo” styling on a new chassis with a 3-inch wheelbase extension, the new Series 62 models nonetheless maintained continuity with their predecessors with refined frontal styling cues. Among the other updates heralded by Series 62, highlights included lower, more streamlined bodies with raked windshields, chrome window reveals and curved rear windows. Traditional running boards were now optional at no extra cost. Rightly recognized as a CCCA Full Classic automobile, this 1940 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible Coupe is one of only 200 examples produced for 1940.
As offered, it continues to benefit handsomely from a professional concours-level, frame-off restoration and proper care thereafter under noted Texan collector Charlie Thomas and the current ownership in California. Colors are excellent, including the very desirable combination of a black exterior finish with red leather upholstery, accented here by a black convertible top. Ample power is delivered by Cadillac’s renowned 346 CI flathead V-8 engine equipped with a downdraft carburetor, mated to a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission driving a semi-floating rear axle, and harnessed by hydraulic drum brakes.
In addition to distinctive Series 62 brightwork, highlights include an in-dash clock, plus choice factory-available options including a heater/defroster, radio and proper steel wheels mounting full-size wheel discs, trim rings and period-style wide whitewall tires. Exceedingly rare as one of just 200 convertible coupes produced on the new C-Body platform for 1940, this CCCA Full Classic is eligible for any worthy event or show and will continue to epitomize the origin of Cadillac’s important Series 62 model lines that would define Cadillac excellence through 1964.
