Cadillac had already grabbed the attention of the automobile world with its introduction of the V-16 in early 1930, when the world was shocked again by the announcement of the new 370A V-12 in October of that year. With four separate lines of cars and three different series of engines, Cadillac maintained its domination of the fine car field. This restored 1931 Cadillac 370A V-12 Fleetwood 4760 five-passenger Sport Phaeton has from the beginning been one of the most popular body types for owners and collectors. This 1931 V-12 Sport Phaeton is based on a 140-inch wheelbase chassis equipped with vacuum-assisted mechanical drum brakes on all four corners.
The chassis rolls on 18-inch, steel-spoke wheels with red-painted hubs and rims, and stainless spokes. The wheels are accented with bright Cadillac-badged hubcaps and mounted with wide whitewall tires. The 368 CI OHV V-12 engine is based on the V-16 but with four fewer cylinders, producing 135 HP at 3,400 RPM. Like the V-16, the V-12 is equipped with dual updraft Johnson carburetors and hydraulic valve silencers on the rocker bushings. The V-12 features the same styled appearance of the V-16 with gloss black and polished aluminum components. The transmission is a floor-shifted synchromesh 3-speed manual.
The body of this Cadillac is by Fleetwood and is finished in cream with black fenders and red and black striping on the body moldings. The body is equipped with an accessory rear tonneau folding windshield and wind wings. Dual black, steel-covered, side-mounted spares with chrome-plated mirrors are on both front fenders, and an accessory black-painted steel trunk sits on the rear rack. Dual chrome-plated accessory spotlights are mounted on both sides of the windshield. The iconic chrome-plated radiator shell and standard stone guard are topped with an accessory Flying Goddess mascot.
Dual chrome-plated trumpet horns are mounted below the large headlights, and dual Pilot Ray driving lights that turn with the front wheels sit behind the plated, single-bar front bumper. An optional, original-type radio antenna is visible just behind the right running board, while a tan fabric convertible top covers the passenger compartment when weather requires it. The interior is trimmed in red leather with black wool carpet. The instrument panel holds four small and two large round gauges including a large Jaeger clock. This Cadillac has been awarded a Grand National AACA Senior award and will likely be the star of any classic car or Cadillac show, tour or collection.
