“Who ya gonna call?” The line became world famous and synonymous with the blockbuster hit film “Ghostbusters” from 1984, and the film proved popular enough for the studios to back the production of “Ghostbusters II” in 1989, a “Ghostbusters” reboot in 2016, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” in 2021 and “Ghostbusters 4,” set for release in 2023. To say the film franchise is a popular one is an understatement “of epic proportions.” While the original movie featured a heavily customized 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Sentinel ambulance, the 2016 reboot featured a more modern Cadillac S&S hearse, like this one, which was modified to serve the needs of paranormal research.
With the instantly recognizable vehicle known throughout the film franchise as Ecto-1, this 1981 Cadillac Fleetwood Wagon was built by Casey Productions to promote the 2016 film in the Las Vegas, Nevada, area. It’s finished in Ghostbusters livery and complete with the roof rack loaded with ghost entrapment and containment units, a step ladder and other props, and the loveable Slimer rides atop the front of the roof near the beacon safety light. Rolling on red steel wheels, the Ghostbusters commercial radio plays the theme music. The glovebox is signed by Paul Feig, who co-wrote and directed the 2016 film, and the cargo area is fitted with other props.
At the front of the lengthy hood is a custom silver ghost hood ornament. The S&S hearse is powered by a 6.0L V-8 engine and automatic transmission, and the front seat is upholstered in blue cloth. This 1981 Cadillac has had an interesting life. Originally built for Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles, California, it served the cemetery through 1998, carrying an estimated 25,000 people to their final resting place. It was then sold to the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department in 1999 to serve as the “Stay off Drugs” promotional vehicle until 2014.
Following its stint with the sheriff’s office, it was sold to a private individual that in turn sold it to the New Orleans VooDoo indoor football team, who used the car as a crowd pleaser in the Superdome for five seasons, until it was sold and converted into an Ecto-1 to promote the 2016 Ghostbusters film.
