Originally sold in, and a longtime resident of, the Salt Lake City Valley area of Utah, this 1979 Cadillac Deville has been in the seller’s possession since October of 2001. One of about 100 Coupe Devilles professionally converted into convertibles that year by Hess & Eisenhardt, this one showed just 2,610 miles at the time of consignment, making it possibly the lowest-mileage 1979 Cadillac Deville Le Cabriolet available today. A red leather interior contrasts dramatically against the white body and convertible top, the overall presentation being one of striking showroom splendor.
A study in originality, this Le Cabriolet is accompanied by stunning rarities such as the original Hess & Eisenhardt hood ornament, the 8-track tape that came with the car when it was new and an NOS GM car chemical set. A V-8 engine and an automatic transmission work with the rear wheels to effortlessly pull the Le Cabriolet along. A natural-born boulevardier if ever there was one, the car is complete with luxurious amenities such as air conditioning, an AM/FM stereo with an 8-track tape player, cruise control, delay wipers, Twilight Sentinel headlights, leather upholstery and wood-grain interior accents.
Rolling on Vogue tires with period-correct Cadillac chrome wire wheels, the car will be sold with the original steel wheels and wire hubcaps. With the public showing a higher interest in safety, sales of the Cadillac Eldorado convertible dwindled as the 1970s rolled on. This prompted the division to announce that it would cease production of the model by the end of 1976, leaving them with no factory droptop. To fill the void, Cadillac called upon Hess & Eisenhardt, a coachbuilder founded in 1876, to produce a convertible version of the Coupe Deville for the 1978 and 1979 model years.
Having produced their first automobile body in 1906 and every presidential limousine between 1948 and 2001, H&E was well qualified for the task. The Coupe Deville bodies were completely reinforced for convertible duty by H&E. The convertible top was crafted from topline materials and included padding and a headliner that integrated beautifully with the mildly altered interior for an absolutely factory look and fit. The idea, of course, was to build a car that offered better-than-average materials and build quality, a car that looked and felt as though Cadillac had actually built it.
A self-contained electrohydraulic system with many standardized parts to ensure reliability and serviceability was employed to raise and lower the top seamlessly. Priced in the $20,000 range, the Le Cabriolet was born, costing roughly double the price of a regular Coupe Deville. Despite the astounding MSRP, Le Cabriolet sold well enough that Cadillac began working with H&E to convert new Eldorados beginning in 1980, a job that would be shared with American Sunroof Corporation (ASC) starting with the 1984 model year.
