Featuring an all-new body style that predicted the changes made across much of the GM product line the following year, the 1954 Buick Special series also featured a new frame designed specifically for the Nailhead V-8, which debuted the year before on the rest of the Buick product line. The new body featured mildly hooded headlamps, a vertical element grille, an attractive wraparound windshield, forward-leaning vent windows, the familiar trio of Buick portholes and a sweeping side spear. Dual bullet tail lamps on each side and a wraparound rear bumper highlighted the tail section.
Under the hood, the new Buick V-8 replaced the venerable “Fireball” straight-8 and displaced 264 CI with a 3.625-inch bore and a 3.22-inch stroke. It was a small-bore version of the 322 available in the larger Buicks. It was rated at 150 HP when mated to a Dynaflow automatic, as it is with this Cascade Blue 1954 Buick Special four-door sedan with a gray houndstooth interior. It features a Sonomatic AM radio, seat belts, a heater and defroster, chrome bumpers and trim, and chrome hubcaps with body-colored wheels and blackwall tires.
This 1954 Buick Special is an interesting twist, as it’s a fairly basic, entry-level sedan from one of GM’s upper-level divisions, considering Buick was second only to Cadillac in the hierarchy. It’s also a fantastic Buick Special and is a very interesting and rare example of a car that is seldom seen today but was once a popular choice for new-car buyers in 1954, as 70,356 such units were built in this body style. It’s a great alternative to the more ubiquitous Tri-Five Chevy.
