In 1985, if you wanted class and luxury, Buick Rivieras like the car offered here were among the best in America. This model year heralded the end of the sixth-generation version of the Riviera nameplate, which had defined Buick’s personal-luxury line since its 1963 introduction. The ’79 model changeover to create the sixth generation was a departure from the past, with front-wheel-drive, but wildly popular as the company sold more than 370,000 of them. Indeed, 65,305 were built this final season of that design, but do not assume the car here is commonplace. That is because this is a T-type turbocharger-optioned convertible, of which the company created a grand total of just 49 units.
In fact, this restored beauty is a quite exclusive tribute to Buick’s turbocharged era with an appearance that is not seen often in the collector-car hobby. The heart of the matter is the turbocharged 3.8L V-6 engine, rated at 200 HP and most famous in the Grand National Regal line. Advances like computer-controlled coil ignition and sequential fuel injection made it dependable and efficient. White and red were the only two paint colors offered; this one is white with the maroon leather interior. Inside one finds air conditioning, bucket seats with a center console, and power windows, locks, mirrors and seats.
The driving is with ease thanks to a tilt column, cruise control, power steering and power brakes. An AM/FM cassette stereo resides in the dash. Buick’s excellent reputation for quality carries on throughout the design, with crisp lines and a level of refined elegance. Finishing off that sense of luxury are full-size wire wheel covers and whitewall tires. The V-6 T-type Buicks are recognized among the very best performance cars of the 1980s.
