This stylishly aggressive 2018 BMW M5 is one of the 400 exclusive First Edition models that kicked off model-year 2018 production. Purists reacted with shock when BMW announced that its sixth-generation M5 would be available only with all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. In fact, it proved to be a successful adaptation of all-wheel drive technology, adding a brilliantly executed new aspect to the traditional M5 formula.
Integrated with the M5’s Adaptive M suspension, Dynamic Stability control and M compound ventilated disc brakes, the all-wheel drive system operates in most situations with an emphasis on rear-wheel drive, but seamlessly steps in when required under high-performance driving conditions. BMW has designed the system to work effectively with the towering output of the M5’s 4.4L V-8, which employs twin turbochargers, variable valve control and high-precision direct injection to crank out 600 HP and 553 lb-ft of torque through a paddle-shifted 8-speed automatic transmission equipped with launch control. The 2018 M5 offered here has all the makings of a future classic.
Limited to just 400 units worldwide, the $18,300 First Edition option package adds several bespoke features to this already impressive automobile. Identified by its exclusive Frozen Dark Red paintwork, the package includes BMW Individual high-gloss Black Shadow Line trim on the kidney grille, and M5 fender vents, 20-inch light alloy wheels and the quad tailpipes of the included M Sport exhaust system. Piano Black trim decorates the First Edition Smoke White interior, which also includes Apple CarPlay compatibility, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and red accent stitching.
