Since 1972, the BMW “M Group”—the M standing for motorsports— has been responsible for some of the greatest and most potent high-performance cars to come from the German manufacturer. Iconic sports cars such as the 3.0 CSL and the M1 have all sprung from this small racing and high-performance subdivision of BMW. However, in 1984, the speed-meisters in the M Group turned their attention to what they could do with a simple four-door sedan, the E28 5 Series. The result of that exercise was one of the greatest “sleeper” sedans of all time: the M5.
Debuted at the 1986 Amsterdam Auto Show, the hopped-up M5 featured a 282 HP version of the inline 6-cylinder engine used in the M1 sports car, and it was quickly crowned the fastest production sedan in the world. Since its introduction, the M5 has gone through no fewer than five generations of production, all culminating in today’s twin-turbocharged 619 HP F90 version. This 2001 BMW M5 hailing from The Reggie Jackson Collection was purchased new by the baseball legend, and it remains in highly original condition, aside from its upgraded polished wheels.
