The BMW 2002 was first introduced in 1968 and it was one of their first fun and practical cars. The large boot and four seat layout made the car practical, but it was the 2 litre engine and fantastic suspension that made the car performance oriented at the same time. After the Second World War, companies such as BMW were struggling to stay in business. When the 2002 was introduced, little did BMW know that they would go on to sell over 800,000 units. In 1976, when 2002 production stopped, the 3-series would take its place, based on the same sports saloon platform. Over 40 years later, many of these 2002"s are still going strong and have achieved somewhat of a cult status.
The 1972 model offered here is an early desirable round tail light model. This example has been under the same ownership since 1984 and has been well cared for throughout its life. Having been used sparingly over this time (roughly 300 miles per year) and stored in a dry, heated garage throughout its life, the car is presented in remarkably good, solid and almost original condition.
The original BMW hand book and lots of history including old MOT's are in the history file. Even the original Blaupunkt radio (with its handbook) is still fitted to the car, just the way BMW put it together in 1972.
BMW 2002's are rewarding cars to drive, as well as being practical and spacious for a small coupé, they are easy and cheap to maintain. This car ticks all the right boxes to be a great entry-level iconic classic car.
