In 2006, Audi announced that their five-time-winning Le Mans prototype racer R8 would lend its storied name to a production automobile. The resulting Audi R8 road car made its debut at the Paris Auto Show that fall. The mid-engine 2-seat supercar stood as a halo automobile for the Audi brand from its outset. The first-generation Audi R8 were produced until 2015, when second-generation production began after a debut at the Geneva Motor Show. This 2012 Audi R8 Coupe features the Lamborghini-based V-10 engine mounted amidships in its aluminum monocoque spaceframe and just 5,405 actual miles traveled since new.
The 5.2-liter dual overhead camshaft V-10 engine is rated for 525 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque for a 105-horsepower bump over the V-8 Audi R8. The 6-speed R-Tronic single-clutch automatic transmission utilizes steering wheel-mounted paddle-shifters, driver-selectable modes and launch control. From a standing start 60 miles per hour comes in fewer than 4 seconds and 100 MPH arrives just 4 second later. Top speed is more than 196 MPH. Full-time Quattro all-wheel drive is rear-wheel biased. Forged aluminum double wishbone suspension, active magnetic damping and race-inspired 4-wheel disc brakes work together for precision handling.
A glass cover frames the naturally aspirated V-10 engine in the center of the low-slung R8. Carbon-fiber sigma exterior package accents the lightweight aluminum body panels, and a power rear spoiler deploys automatically or with the touch of a button. The interior is a sporting yet sophisticated combination of rich top-quality leather, suede-like Alcantara and aluminum combined with air conditioning, power heated seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Audi R8 holds the road with 19-inch 5-spoke staggered-width aluminum wheels equipped with ultra-high performance 245/35 R19 tires in front and 295/35 R19 in the rear.
