Aston Martin and Zagato have been creating jaw-dropping designs together for nearly six decades – beginning with the hugely successful DB4 GT Zagato in 1961.
After a two-decade absence, the Milan-based carrosserie joined with Aston Martin again in the 1980s, presenting the V8 Vantage Zagato in both coupe and Volante versions, followed by the DB7 Zagato models in 2002. Subsequent Zagato models have cemented the partnership, and some of Aston Martin’s most exclusive models have had the Zagato touch.
In 2016, the most recent collaboration was unveiled in concept form at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como. Though unmistakable as an Aston Martin, the Vanquish Zagato coupe has bodywork that could only have come from the pens at Zagato, including that famous “double-bubble” roof and signature wraparound glass. Elements such as the grille shape and side strake that runs from the wheel arch to the door remain wholly Aston Martin; hints of the track-only Vulcan and road-going One-77 shine through in the “bladed” LED taillights and the side mirrors that appear to float in the air.
Overall, the Vanquish Zagato concept otherwise had a one-off flair – except that the automaker green-lighted production of 99 coupe examples directly after Villa d’Este, with convertible, speedster, and shooting brake models following shortly after. Each coupe, built at Aston Martin’s Gaydon, Warwickshire, factory for the 2018 model year, was individually numbered and just 15 were earmarked for the U.S. All 99 examples share the uprated, 592-hp version of Aston Martin’s V-12 engine that delivers power to the rear wheels, an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and big CCM brakes lurking behind its 20-in. alloy wheels.
Though the Vanquish Zagato’s prime appeal lies in its styling, the purity of its naturally aspirated V-12 and rear-wheel-drive make it a thrilling performance.
On offer here is one of the 15 U.S.-specification coupes. Finished in the Villa d’Este concept design color of Lava Red, this Vanquish Zagato is as stunning to behold as it was at Lake Como. The interior is as luxurious as Aston Martin can create – the Lava red exterior is echoed with Black and Spicy Red duotone seats, accented by “Z” quilting on the seats and side doors. Equipped with the optional “Villa d’Este” package, the badges, wheel spokes, and side strakes are picked out in gold – which is then brought through to the dashboard on vents and elements of switchgear. Aston Martin’s herringbone carbon fiber facia completes the package, surrounding the driver in the finest materials available.
Showing only delivery mileage and, as is to be expected from a vehicle showing fewer than 50 miles on its odometer, it is in as-new condition. A seamless blend of British and Italian style, this unique limited-edition Vanquish Zagato is an instant collectible and sure to draw a crowd wherever it appears.
