One of the more surprising aspects of today's motoring scene is the proliferation of SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) with even manufacturers that had built their reputations as purveyors of exclusively sporting cars climbing aboard the bandwagon. Taking its name from the eponymous Alpine pass in northern Italy, the Stelvio - Alfa Romeo's first offering in this increasingly important market sector - made its public debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. In keeping with Alfa Romeo's well-deserved reputation for producing exciting drivers' cars, the compact Stelvio was based on the acclaimed Giulia saloon, sharing the latter's design language and most of its engineering.
Within a year there was also a high-performance Quadrifoglio model in the range, powered by a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine, and it was this that formed the basis of the Quadrifoglio Racing Edition. Introduced at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the Quadrifoglio Racing celebrated Alfa Romeo's racing history, its arrival coinciding with its Sauber-run Formula 1 team signing Italian driver Antonio Giovinazzi, who joined the former World Champion, Kimi Räikkönen.
According to Alfa Romeo: "The trademark Competition Red livery pays tribute to the F1 single-seater, as do the sinuous lines and the extensive use of carbon fibre for exterior details." Powering the limited edition Quadrifoglio Racing was a tuned version of the 2.9-litre V6 twin-turbo engine producing a mighty 520 PS (513bhp), while the titanium exhaust system, carbon-ceramic brakes and carbon shells for the seats saved a significant amount of weight compared to lesser models.
The generous package of standard equipment included an Alfa Connect 3D Navigation system with 8.8" high definition display; DAB audio system; Carplay and Android auto smart phone integration; Adaptive Cruise Control; and a Harman Kardon sound system. Only 14 examples of the Quadrifoglio Racing Edition were built and the car we offer, which had covered only 792 kilometres at time of cataloguing, has been signed by Kimi Räikkönen.
