The Alfa Rome Type 33 was a leviathan in the Mille Miglia, Spa and other high octane road-racing events in the 1960s. At its heart was the 2½ litre, V8 engine pushing this classic racer to multiple victories and it is this self same unit, although de-tuned for obvious reasons, that can be found in the Montreal. Still, 200bhp through the ZF gearbox and modified 105 series rear axle were incorporated to good effect. Truly an exotic powerplant for a road car. In 1967, Alfa Romeo was asked to provide an exhibit that would be representative of the automotive industry. The result was a fabulous prototype designed by Marcello Gandini of the Bertone styling house and named Montreal in honour of the event.
This fabulous example, in classic red with black interior, was supplied new to Frankfurt, Germany in September, 1974 and only recently made its way to the UK. It was the subject of an older restoration and has been much cherished since. As a consequence, the works done have stood the test of time. The previous owner spent an incredible £25,000 since 2015 on refurbishments including a full engine and fuel injection system rebuild by marque specialists, a re-built rear axle and much more. All detailed in a comprehensive history file that certainly deserves closer inspection.
Needless to say, the driving experience is reported to be excellent as is backed up by a recent 300 miles round trip to the Continent. More and more importantly these days, true examples significant marques need to ‘signed off’ by the factory and so, importantly, this car come complete its ‘Classiche’ paperwork.
An excellent example of one of the most handsome, well engineered and best driving motorcars, Alfa Romeo have ever produced.
