This 1900 CSS was built on 4 April 1957 and then sold on 3 June 1957 to the Cotonificio Lampugnani in Milan. In 1967, when the car was still in Milan, it belonged to Angelo Motta, who kept it until 1985. It was at this point that the Italian racing driver Count Giovanni Lurani Cernuschi became its owner. During his career, the count had taken part in several major races before and after the war, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Targa Florio and the Mille Miglia. In 1990, the car was sold to U. Colombo, also in Milan. In 2015, the car was purchased in an auction by an Italian dealer. The latter sold it a few months later to its current owner.
This Super Sprint is today in superb condition; it was repainted to a very high standard more than ten years ago, most likely in Italy. The interior is also in amazingly well-preserved condition: the seats trimmed in cloth and leatherette show very little wear and it is possible that the complete interior may be original. The engine is of the correct type (AR1308) for the model and also corresponds to the car’s year of production; it is very likely the original unit. The car comes today with a ‘libretto’ dating from 1967, its FIVA card and ASI certificate, as well as its ‘certificato di origine’ from Alfa Romeo.
An exceptionally elegant model, with a distinguished previous owner, this 1900 CSS will be certain to appeal to connoisseurs of the make who are looking for an original and historic car. After spending nearly six decades in Milan, with a limited number of owners, it is currently part of the collection of a meticulous and exacting enthusiast. Its next owner will therefore become the custodian of an important part of Alfa Romeo’s history.
