Toyota's long-awaited MR2 revival appears to be moving another step closer to reality. A fresh batch of spy photos and a video captured at Fuji Speedway reveal what looks like another development prototype, giving enthusiasts one more glimpse of the sports car that many have been waiting years to see.

The heavily disguised test vehicle appears to use a GR Yaris-based body, but its unusual appearance immediately hints that something far more exciting is hiding underneath. A large front-mounted radiator, oversized air intakes behind the doors, and mismatched body panels suggest Toyota is still focusing on engineering rather than final styling.

Earlier this year, Toyota allowed journalists to drive the mysterious mid-engine "M Concept", although the company stopped short of confirming it would eventually become the next-generation MR2. However, GR chief engineer Naohiko Saito revealed that multiple development vehicles were planned, with six prototypes already completed and at least 14 more scheduled during the testing program. Based on that timeline, this newly spotted car could represent the seventh evolution of the MR2 project.

Although every prototype differs in detail, they all share several important characteristics. Each uses a mid-engine layout, features all-wheel drive, and continues to evolve as Toyota fine-tunes the package. Earlier prototypes were powered by the turbocharged 1.6-liter G16E-GTS three-cylinder found in the GR Yaris. However, the exhaust note heard in the latest video suggests this mule may now be testing the newer turbocharged 2.0-liter G20E inline-four, although Toyota has not officially confirmed the powertrain.

Despite more than three years of development, the production-ready MR2 still appears to be some distance away. Even so, Toyota's continued testing shows the company remains committed to bringing back one of its most beloved sports car nameplates.
