Ram Brings Back Pure Hemi Power

Ram is taking a different approach with its upcoming trucks by simplifying the powertrain of the 2027 Ram 1500. The company has confirmed that it will gradually discontinue the 48-volt 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 eTorque system and the associated automatic stop-start technology, bringing the legendary V8 closer to its traditional configuration.

Since 2019, the eTorque system has paired the Hemi V8 with a 48-volt battery that replaced the conventional alternator. The setup delivered extra low-end torque, smoother engine restarts, and improved fuel efficiency while preserving the character of the iconic engine.

However, beginning early in the 2027 model year, most buyers choosing the 2027 Ram 1500 with the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 will receive a non-hybrid version instead. According to Ram, a limited number of 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 eTorque trucks will still be produced during the transition before the hybrid system is fully phased out.

The move also signals the end of automatic stop-start technology on these models. Designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by shutting the engine off while the vehicle is stationary, the feature has never been particularly popular with many American truck owners.

Could Ram's decision reflect what customers have wanted all along? The timing is also notable, as the U.S. government removed EPA incentive credits for stop-start technology earlier in 2026, reducing one of the reasons manufacturers continued offering the system.

Ram briefly retired the Hemi in 2025 before bringing it back in response to customer demand. Now the engine is returning even closer to its original formula, emphasizing simplicity over electrification.

Will buyers welcome the return of a traditional V8 without hybrid assistance? Could other truck manufacturers follow Ram's lead and abandon stop-start systems? Or will electrified powertrains remain the long-term direction for the pickup market?
