Jeep’s Hurricane Six Is Coming?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee could be getting a major powertrain upgrade for 2028. According to a recent report, Jeep is preparing to add the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six, potentially giving the SUV 420 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque. Jeep has not officially confirmed the plan.

The reported engine would be the Standard-Output version rather than the 550-hp High-Output variant. That would still make it considerably more powerful than the current 324-hp turbocharged four-cylinder and even the discontinued 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, which produced 360 hp and 390 lb-ft in the Grand Cherokee.

The inline-six could also address the Grand Cherokee’s towing gap. The current four-cylinder model is rated for up to 6,200 pounds, while the Hemi-equipped Grand Cherokee previously offered substantially more capability. A Hurricane-powered version could help restore some of that lost capacity.

A V-8 return reportedly remains unlikely outside a possible SRT model. Jeep has already demonstrated that the Hurricane can fit in a Grand Cherokee prototype, making the rumored production version even more interesting.
