Petrol engines

An ignition coil produces high voltage, and a discharge between the plug electrodes initiates combustion. Electrode wear changes the conditions needed for a reliable spark. An engine may still idle smoothly yet hesitate during acceleration. A quiet, steady idle therefore does not establish that the plugs work correctly throughout the engine’s operating range.

Petrol hybrids

Both mild hybrids and plug-in petrol hybrids retain spark ignition. Spending considerable time on electric power is not a reason to extend plug life independently. Follow the applicable schedule, any specified age limit and the engine’s condition. A brief engine start and repeated combustion misfires are different events that need to be distinguished when investigating a complaint.

Diesel engines

Diesel fuel ignites in a cylinder heated by compressed air. A glow plug supplies additional heat to assist starting and support stable combustion during warm-up. It does not generate an ignition spark. Operating duration depends on the control system: the preheating indicator going out does not necessarily mean that all heating has stopped.

Glow system problems

On a diesel, watch for longer cranking after parking, uneven running during the first seconds and unusual exhaust smoke. Hot weather may make some symptoms less apparent while an electrical fault remains. Checks cover the plugs, power supply, wiring, glow control unit and battery condition. A difficult hot restart deserves particular care before the glow system is blamed.

Dusty conditions increase the importance of a sound air filter and a sealed intake. Ambient dust does not establish a new plug interval on its own. Keeping intake maintenance and leaks under control is more useful than setting an arbitrary kilometre limit for replacement.

Why diagnosis should not be postponed

Combustion misfires can allow unburned fuel into the exhaust and overheat the catalytic converter. Available engine output also falls. In a heavy saloon, the loss can become particularly noticeable during acceleration, when the driver expects the usual reserve of power. Glow system faults are more likely to become apparent during starting and warm-up. A successful start on a warm day does not prove that the system is healthy. Find the specific spark plug replacement entry and its applicability conditions. Check the engine, model year, distance units and any time limit. A Service A or Service B entry without an itemised work record does not confirm that the plugs were changed. Mercedes-Benz also notes engine and model-year differences in its maintenance guidance.

For a diesel, first establish whether a scheduled glow plug operation applies to that engine. Where no fixed replacement point is specified, use diagnostic findings. An “iridium” label or matching dimensions do not prove compatibility. Two visually similar plugs may have different thermal characteristics. Why does a hybrid still need spark plugs

Can the petrol plug interval be used for a diesel
