Back in 1963, while the Plymouth Sport Fury represented visible racing machinery as driven on track by the likes of Richard Petty, most street versions were standard fare. Higher-end convertibles like this example were not often built on the assembly line with performance as a key factor at that time, either. That is not the case here, as this special Mopar has been modified inside and out. One telltale sign is the 1965 Hemi Super Stock scoop on the hood, which is truth in advertising as it is over a 528 CI Hemi V-8 engine now installed between the front fenders. Complete with Mopar Performance valve covers, offset dual Holley 4-barrel carburetors, the cross-ram intake manifold and modern MSD ignition pieces, this Hemi is just the sort of powerplant design needed to meet the cruising standard of “too much is just enough.” The engine is backed by a pushbutton-actuated automatic transmission and an updated Detroit Speed differential with a bare-metal rear housing cover. An aluminum radiator keeps it cool under pressure while a newer dual-circuit master cylinder is now in place of the factory “jelly jar” design. Finished in red with OEM-design red-and-white vinyl interior, this Plymouth retains the correct Sport Fury trim components and style-wise instantly recalls the early 1960s. The original dash and button layout is complemented with an Auto Meter tachometer and auxiliary gauges. This car has front bucket seats and a center console, Transaudio pushbutton AM radio, factory gauging, two-spoke steering wheel and red carpeting. There are custom Super Stock 528 badges on the front fenders, with the Sport Fury brushed-metal side trim and script logos, front and rear bumper guards and chrome driver’s side mirror as additional exterior décor. With a higher-than-stock stance, this car rides on a set of custom wheels with blackwall rubber, a fitting choice for the rest of the package. For those looking for a show-and- “go…go…GO!” droptop with power to spare, this Sport Fury is ready to move. https://www.mecum.com/lots/465324/1963-plymouth-sport-fury-convertible/
