Offering sportiness, performance and good fuel economy at a low price, the Escort GT combined sporty looks, nifty handling and a souped-up 4-cylinder to inject a performance image into the economy-based Escort. This Medium Red Metallic 1987 Escort GT remains in highly original condition and has been maintained and serviced at the owner’s Ford dealership. The first-year Escort GT is equipped with a Medium Gray sport bucket-seat interior, a 5-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, speed control and an AM/FM/cassette stereo. When Ford introduced the North American version of the Escort in 1981 as a replacement for the Pinto, the subcompact car was essentially an economy vehicle like the one it replaced. As the first “world car” produced by Ford, the front-wheel drive Escort shared componentry with the European MkIII Escort. The Escort GT was added in 1987 as part of a revised three-trim lineup. Available as a three-door hatchback only, the GT was readily identified by its asymmetrical grille, front air dam with built-in fog lamps, wheel flares, a rear spoiler, blackout paint treatment, wheel spats, body and rocker panel moldings, and performance tires mounted on 8-spoke aluminum wheels. For the GT, the Escort’s 4-wheel independent suspension was tuned for sporty handling with specially valved shocks and struts, plus larger stabilizer bars. Even better, the GT came with an H.O. version of the 1.9L 4-cylinder engine. Rated at 108 HP, 22 more than the standard Escort, the GT’s extra power came from multiport fuel injection, tuned intake and exhaust manifolds, a performance camshaft with roller tappers and a lightweight flywheel. Fresh from a recent professional detailing, this 1987 Escort GT features a clean undercarriage and comes with its Marti Report. https://www.mecum.com/lots/502561/1987-ford-escort-gt/
