Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback, 1969

Chassis No.: 9F02Z195381 Auction: Indy 2018 Auction date: May 20, 2018 Lot No.: F146 $230,000 | High bid • Exterior: White • Interior: Black • Body: Fastback • KK no. 1785 • 1 of 857 Mustang Boss 429s produced in 1969 • Delivered new to Don Shirk Ford in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania • Concours preparation overseen by Ed Meyer, head judge of the SAAC • Matching numbers 429 CI engine • Close ratio 4-speed transmission • 3.91 Traction-Lok differential • Competition suspension • Power steering • Power front disc brakes • One repaint in original Wimbledon White • Original interior and undercarriage • Functional front spoiler • Color-keyed mirrors • Visibility group • Believed to be 33,960 original miles • Produced in accordance to Nascar rules • Deluxe Marti Report Multiple show awards and a concours-level preparation overseen by the head judge of the Shelby American Automobile Club are just two of the qualities that recommend this superb 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback to discerning collectors. The 1969 and 1970 Boss 429 stands alone at the pinnacle of classic muscle-car era Mustangs. Created as a homologation special to qualify the new 429 CI “semi-hemi” engine for NASCAR competition, the Boss 429 was specially modified and hand-built at Ford’s outside racing and special projects contractor, Kar Kraft of Brighton, Michigan. The transformation from standard 428 Super Cobra Jet-equipped Mustang to Boss 429 involved extensively modifying each car’s front suspension by cutting and repositioning the shock towers and fitting redesigned upper control arms, stronger spindles and reinforcement bracings to accommodate the massive Boss engine. Only 857 cars were built in 1969, including this splendid example carrying Kar Kraft No. 1785. Built on May 8, 1969, and delivered to Don Shirk Ford in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania, it is powered by a matching-numbers 820-T engine equipped with beefed production connecting rods and a hydraulic cam. Like all Boss 429s it incorporates a remote engine-oil cooler, heavy-duty Toploader close-ratio 4-speed transmission, 3.91:1 Traction-Lok differential, power front disc brakes, Competition Suspension with front and rear anti-roll bars and staggered rear shocks, a trunk-mounted battery, chromed 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels and Goodyear Polyglas F60-15 tires. The Deluxe Décor interior with console, Visibility Group, 8,000 RPM tachometer, front spoiler and color-keyed racing mirrors were also standard. At 33,960 original miles, it’s a highly original car with a single professional repaint in the original Wimbledon White, and KK No. 1785 further boasts the outstanding original black interior and undercarriage, the results of a meticulous concours preparation overseen by SAAC Head Judge Ed Meyer. A consistent leading scorer in concours events including three SAAC awards, this premium Boss 429 is documented with a Deluxe Marti Report. https://www.mecum.com/lots/326880/1969-ford-mustang-boss-429-fastback/

    Ford’s 795-HP Mustang Goes Topless

Ford has taken the Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC and turned it into an open-top grand tourer with a massive 795 hp / 806 PS and 660 lb-ft / 895 Nm of supercharged torque. Revealed ahead of the Woodward Dream Cruise, the convertible trades some of the coupe’s track-focused character for a more relaxed GT experience. To handle the missing roof, Ford softened the suspension and added a magnesium strut-tower brace for extra chassis rigidity. The rear wing and hood scoop were also revised to suit the new aerodynamics. Carbon-ceramic brakes and carbon-fiber wheels aren’t offered, reinforcing the car’s grand-touring mission rather than chasing maximum track performance. Power comes exclusively from a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Ford is aiming directly at buyers of the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, offering huge American horsepower and open-air V8 drama for more than $108,000 / €99,000. Orders open this fall, with a claimed top speed of 150 mph / 241 kph. Can this Mustang really steal buyers from the Porsche 911 Cabriolet? Is sacrificing some track aggression worth the convertible experience?
