In the early 1960s, Kaiser-Willys realized it needed a way to present its Jeep CJ-5 as more than a faithful workhorse. The company wanted it to appeal to the well-to-do as an upscale "fun" vehicle equally suited for the beach as it was for working the farm, and so the CJ-5 "Tuxedo Park" package was introduced as an upscale-market appearance and trim package for the 1961-64 Willys Jeep CJ-5. The distinguishing features essentially amounted to a bunch of unique chrome bits, special upgraded seat upholstery, hubcaps and other details that made them stand out from a regular CJ-5.
However, the Tuxedo Park Jeeps were not a huge success, and like any vintage CJ-5, most fell victim to hard use, making a good, original Willys CJ tough to find today, especially a rare Tuxedo Park. This spectacular example was purchased from the ritzy confines of Paradise Valley, Arizona, in 2016, in amazing, rust-free condition, still wearing its original Indian Ceramic paint. It was treated to a sympathetic cosmetic freshening, which included painting the exterior surfaces and cargo area in a precisely matched Indian Ceramic single-stage paint that mimics the original sheen it had when new. The seats were recovered with custom upholstery matching the original pattern.
The CJ was also gone-through mechanically; the braking, cooling and fuel systems were restored, and the engine and drivetrain were serviced. The carburetor was rebuilt, as was the distributor, and a Pertronix Ignitor electronic ignition was fitted. The valves were adjusted, fluids were changed, all wheels were powder coated and new correct tires were fitted. The original speedometer and multi-gauge assembly was also restored, and a correct new exhaust was fitted.
According to its owner, this Willys is well tuned with functioning 4-wheel-drive, and original well-preserved factory finishes are still present on the undercarriage and throughout the engine compartment where factory grease-pencil markings remain. A stylish and well-cared-for example like this doesn’t come around often, and this eager little CJ-5 Tuxedo Park is unlikely to disappoint.
